Lola Young - "From Down Here"

Lola Young’s “From Down Here” feels startlingly personal, but the line that gets me isn’t some grand confession. It’s “Not quite alive, I’m somewhere in between.” That particular kind of limbo is harder to explain than sadness. Life is still happening. You’re technically participating. You just haven’t entirely caught up with yourself yet.

I have a feeling Lola and I could sit quietly for a while and still understand each other. The best conversations occasionally work that way. Nobody races to fill the empty space or tries to produce the correct sentence on demand. You just recognize what’s sitting between you. “From Down Here” has that same quality. It leaves enough room for you to bring your own unfinished business.

James Blake co-wrote and produced the track, and you can hear why the pairing works almost immediately. Lola’s voice sits way out front while distant synths hang around the edges and that snare keeps arriving with almost rude punctuality. Dry. Exact. Slightly ominous. It gives the song a clock without ever telling you what you’re supposed to be counting down toward.

Lola doesn’t oversing any of it. The cracks, breaths and hesitations do more than another octave ever could, especially against production this spare. She sounds like someone trying to tell you the truth before she’s completely figured out what the truth is herself. That’s where “From Down Here” hits hardest.

Maybe that’s what being “somewhere in between” really means. You can look back and recognize who you were without knowing exactly who is waiting on the other side. For four minutes, Lola doesn’t ask us to solve it. She just makes the waiting feel a little less lonely.
