Arthur Hill – “Orange Wine”
Anyone else struggle with aiming for “I’m one of a kind” while immediately fighting with “I’m nothing special”? Enter Arthur Hill, our spirit animal, presenting an almost perfect starter pack of contemporary indie-boy signifiers: orange wine, cropped old T-shirts, tattoos, Letterboxd.
What I particularly like is that the song isn't really arguing that he's unique. It's poking at the absurdity of trying to establish individuality through all the same little cultural choices everyone else uses to establish theirs.
Which reminds me, I have a bottle of orange wine in my refrigerator. A dear friend gave it to me, and I've been too scared to open it, so it's been sitting there for at least two years. I just checked. Still there. Apparently I’m in the starter pack too.
The annoying part is Arthur has made his case with an extremely catchy song. The hook sticks almost immediately, and now “orange wine” has gone from questionable refrigerator resident to soundtrack. Maybe this is finally my excuse to open it. Arthur, if things go south, you’re responsible.
