Thee Sacred Souls x Victor Axelrod – "One and the Same"

Proof that great songs travel well.

Victor Axelrod knows which walls are load-bearing. His take on Thee Sacred Souls' “One and the Same” moves plenty around without disturbing the parts holding everything up.

The original carries urgency. It's asking for empathy in a world that seems determined to choose division instead. Axelrod changes the environment around that plea without taking any weight from it. The reggae-inspired rhythm settles into an easy sway, the bass sinks deeper into the pocket, and suddenly the song carries its message with a nod instead of a raised voice.

The questions have more room to hang in the air here. You sit with them a little longer. The words haven't changed, but the way they reach you has. “Will we ever come together? Will we always be divided?” lands differently when the music gives you somewhere to stay while you think about the answer.

“One and the Same” could wag a finger. Axelrod extends an arm for a high-five. Choosing each other has always been harder than choosing sides, but this version makes the invitation awfully difficult to turn down.

My favorite part of this collaboration is how ego never enters the room. Thee Sacred Souls gave Axelrod a great song, and Axelrod treats it like one. He changes the surroundings without demanding credit for the renovation. By the time he's finished, “One and the Same” has another place to call home.
