strongboi – "think twice"

strongboi – "think twice"

The first listen opens the door. The second changes the room.

Unbeknownst to me, the melody of strongboi's “think twice” followed me out of the song. Hours later, it had moved in without bringing the lyrics along. And boy, did they continue to nag me to go get them. That persistence sent me back, and on the return visit I started hearing what strongboi had tucked inside this incredibly inviting production. I was rewarded for my curiosity.

It was like I'd walked into this beautiful, sunlit room. Alice Phoebe Lou's vocal, keyboards, guitars, harmonies. Everything loose and warm and carefree enough that I could wander around enjoying the place. Then I came back and started noticing what was actually written on the walls: “Will you think twice before you break my heart again?” Suddenly the room hadn't changed, but my understanding of why I was there had.

The carefree feeling I'd carried home was sharing space with a relationship stuck in a loop, wondering whether trust could survive another round. The question isn't delivered like an ultimatum. Alice barely raises her voice to ask it. Even as the words come into focus, the music keeps the windows open and the sunlight pouring in.

And that's when the title pulled off something I hadn't expected. “think twice” wasn't just the lyric I'd missed the first time around. It was practically an instruction. The first listen gave me the melody and the feeling. The second handed me the words, and suddenly I understood why I'd been sent back for them.

That feels especially fitting for Alice Phoebe Lou and Ziv Yamin, who have said they want their music to be “front and center.” There's plenty here they could've underlined for us. Instead, every element seems perfectly happy sharing the room. Nothing needs to elbow its way forward. You get to wander around and decide where to look.

I just happened to need a second visit. And maybe “think twice” knew I would.
