SOMBR - "My Body Isn't Ready"

A song that proves the hardest person to convince is sometimes the one staring back at you.

Your brain can understand that a relationship is over long before the rest of you agrees. You know why it ended. You know going back would be a terrible idea. You can explain the entire situation to a friend with such impressive clarity that, for a few minutes, you almost believe yourself. Then that person walks into the room and your body immediately votes to reopen the case.

sombr understands the jurisdictional dispute. “My Body Isn’t Ready” lives in that frustrating gap between what you know and what you still feel, where every sensible thought in your head is being undermined by a heartbeat, a memory or the fact that you still know exactly how it felt to be close to them. Moving on would be considerably easier if all the relevant departments could agree on a timeline.

That disconnect is what makes the song hurt. sombr doesn't have to turn the breakup into a grand tragedy because the physical response is incriminating enough. His voice carries the exhaustion of knowing better without being able to make knowing better particularly useful. You can hear the argument happening in real time: the relationship has ended, the facts have been reviewed, and his body remains deeply unconvinced.

There should probably be a more efficient system for this. A breakup happens, everyone signs the paperwork, and within five to seven business days your stomach stops dropping when their name appears. Instead, sombr gives us the version we actually get, where closure can be perfectly clear in your head and completely meaningless everywhere else.

“My Body Isn’t Ready” makes a compelling case that moving on isn't really one decision. It's a series of negotiations with parts of yourself that never attended the meeting.

And unfortunately, the body has veto power.
