Sam Smith - "My Guy"
Sam Smith has spent plenty of time singing about the kind of love that ruins your week. “My Guy” is what happens when nobody needs rescuing.
This is love after everyone has calmed down a little. The version built around knowing someone well enough to recognize the tiny habits that would mean absolutely nothing to anyone else and everything to you. The everyday stuff becomes the evidence. Not because the romance has gotten boring, but because eventually having someone folded into the ordinary parts of your life is kind of the whole point.
And Sam sounds genuinely happy there. That might be my favorite thing about “My Guy.” A voice we’ve heard carry enough heartbreak to qualify for hazard pay gets to sound warm, playful and completely at home. There’s no giant emotional crisis waiting around the corner. Nobody needs to dramatically stare out a rain-covered window. Frankly, Sam has earned the afternoon off.
That ease gives “My Guy” its charm. It understands that being completely gone for someone can look surprisingly normal from the outside. You know their habits. You know their moods. You know exactly which thing they do that should annoy you far more than it does. Somewhere along the way, all that familiarity becomes its own language.
Maybe that's the real beauty of “My Guy.” Sam Smith could make falling in love sound enormous. Instead, they make having someone to come home to sound even better.
