Joesef — “Separate”
“Separate” is a beautiful goodbye. The important word there is goodbye.
Joesef spends his latest caught in that miserable stretch where something is over everywhere except inside your head. He watches someone leave, memorizes their face, and then lets the scene play again. And again. And again. He writes the text. Deletes the text. Sees their name and gets the rush anyway. The relationship has ended. The reruns have not.
There is a temptation after losing someone to treat moving on like an exercise in not thinking about them. Push the memory away. Change the subject. Absolutely do not open that particular door because we already know what's behind it. Trouble is, the brain is an asshole with a spare key. “Separate” understands that maybe the only way out is through. Let yourself replay it. Romanticize it. Get angry. Miss them. Briefly consider burning down the city. Ruminate responsibly, but finish the job.
“Separate” marks Joesef's first new chapter since Permanent Damage, and there's something fitting about beginning again with a song still working through an ending. His voice keeps the whole thing achingly beautiful even when the feelings get considerably uglier. He doesn't sound over it yet. That's okay. Some goodbyes need to be replayed before they can finally be left alone.
