Vacations — “Lucky, Forever”

Vacations — “Lucky, Forever”

Forever has a nice ring to it.

Vacations have self-appointed themselves “Australia's greatest boyband,” and we're not currently accepting counterarguments. Especially not while “Lucky, Forever” is playing and a Nashville rainstorm has decided to contribute some live percussion against the leaves outside. Sometimes the listening conditions simply understand the assignment.

“Lucky, Forever” closes the band's new album Pursuit of Anything, and after a record spent considering ambition, adulthood and the different directions a life can take, its answer feels almost suspiciously uncomplicated. Two of a kind. Side by side. Whatever happens, happens. Forever apparently isn't all that long when you've found the person you'd like to spend it with. Terrible news for commitment-phobes. Excellent news for the rest of us.

The song itself is blissed all the way out. Frontman Campbell Burns doesn't oversell the sentiment, and the production doesn't need to underline every emotion in permanent marker. It drifts. It glows. It leaves enough space around itself that today's raindrops can apparently request a feature credit. This one is perfect for setting the mood, provided you're comfortable with the possibility of being lucky forever.

And maybe that's the sweetest part. Burns has said “Lucky, Forever” was inspired by the weddings of bandmates Jake Johnson and Joseph Van Lier, which makes all that wide-eyed devotion feel even warmer. Pursuit of Anything spends its time looking at all the things we chase, only to finish with a song about recognizing when you might already have one worth keeping. No grand revelation required. No weather event necessary, although ours certainly helped.
