strongboi – “dizzy”

Not sure what's in the punch. Definitely having another.

Is someone trying to sweet-talk me? Because it's not not working. There's something immediately disarming about strongboi's “dizzy.” Alice Phoebe Lou and Ziv Yamin have created the musical equivalent of a house party, not the kind where you're shouting over the music and wondering why you bothered coming, but the kind where you lose track of time, make yourself another drink, and realize you haven't looked at your phone in hours. It's warm, wonderfully loose, and full of personality. I'm not sure what they're putting in the punch, but I'll have another.

What's especially impressive is the musicianship underneath all that easygoing charm. The bassline has a life of its own, the melodies seem to tumble into place, and the whole arrangement moves with the confidence of people who could probably pull this off in their sleep. Of course, that kind of effortlessness takes work. The Berlin-based duo started out experimenting with Casio keyboards and broken-down toys before growing strongboi into a six-piece live band, and you can hear the years of curiosity and experience paying off. There's nothing stiff or overly calculated about the result. These are musicians with serious chops who make playing together sound like the most natural thing in the world. It's skillful enough to impress you and relaxed enough to make you forget you're being impressed.

And somewhere in the middle of all this musical charm, Alice is making a pretty convincing case for falling head over heels. She's getting dizzy when someone comes close, weak at the knees when they look at her a certain way, and admitting that things aren't what they used to be. Maybe that's a good thing. There's a sweetness to the writing that never feels syrupy, partly because the music refuses to get too sentimental about itself. It's a love song with its feet on the ground, even if its narrator is having a little trouble staying upright.

That's what makes “dizzy” so appealing. It doesn't need a velvet rope, a guest list, or an elaborate production to convince you you're somewhere worth being. It has the kind of appeal you can't manufacture, no matter how much money you throw at the room. The kind of record that could keep you company all afternoon without wearing out its welcome. And if strongboi happens to be flirting with us along the way, well, who am I to object?

I'm wooed. I'm dizzy.
