Sofia Camara – “Unlike You”

Sofia Camara has a few things to get off her chest, and fortunately for us, she's an exceptional singer with no interest in mincing words. “Unlike You,” from her new EP Still Somewhere Here, is a powerhouse ballad that plays like an exit interview from a relationship that should have ended several performance reviews ago. She's prepared to discuss the dishonesty, the emotional manipulation, the extraordinary amount of effort she contributed, and why she will not be returning for another shift. The paperwork is extensive. The delivery is immaculate.

Ahe lyrics are clever enough to deserve their own round of applause. There's a particularly cutting observation about someone concealing their lies behind a gesture of affection, followed by the realization that her kindness had been turned against her. Sofia isn't reaching for elaborate metaphors when a painfully specific memory will do. Every new detail gives the listener another reason to lean in, and the chorus delivers the verdict with a beautifully uncomplicated promise: the next person will love her properly, stay through the difficult days, and appreciate everything she was made to question about herself.

Then there are the vocals. Holy cow, the vocals. Sofia navigates the kind of runs that require an actual singer, stretching phrases into enormous declarations without sacrificing a syllable of what she's saying. There's real satisfaction in hearing someone reclaim their confidence at full volume, especially when the writing is this direct. By the time she reaches the final chorus, the relationship has been thoroughly examined, the findings are conclusive, and she's already looking toward a better future. No further questions.
