Rex Orange County feat. Daniel Caesar - “Indecision”

Think about the foods people obsess over that are almost suspiciously simple: a perfect cacio e pepe, great bread with butter, scrambled eggs done right. Four ingredients on paper, but the fewer things you're working with, the more each one has to earn its place. There's nowhere for a mediocre ingredient to hide.

That's “Indecision.”

Rex Orange County. Daniel Caesar. Guitar. Two voices that sound incredible together. A melody doing the work of an ingredient list twice its size. And a relationship complicated enough to supply all the friction on its own. The song trusts two people telling the truth about a mess they haven't solved yet. More importantly, it proves it.

The title “Indecision” sounds almost benign compared with what's actually happening. This relationship is stuck in that awful limbo where neither person can quite leave, but staying has stopped being an affirmative choice. They're hanging onto history, wondering what happens if one of them finally walks away, and confronting the particularly shitty realization that loving someone and knowing what to do about it are two different things.

The video takes the same approach. Rex and Daniel are out in the wide-open Montana landscape with little more than each other and a guitar, and all those miles of empty land only push the two of them closer into frame. Caesar spends the entire video holding said guitar like he's prepared to settle the matter by considerably less introspective means, but otherwise, the recipe holds: two voices, one guitar and several unresolved issues.
