Katy B & Jax Jones – "Last Day Of Summer"

Katy B & Jax Jones – "Last Day Of Summer"

The kind of song that outlives its title.

Last day of summer? I fucking wish.

It's currently 94 degrees in Nashville, and a polar vortex can't arrive soon enough. The lyric says, “All the chills on my skin.” Meanwhile I'm over here producing enough sweat and sunscreen to make my esthetician sigh before I even walk through the door.

Luckily, Jax Jones and Katy B have built my dream 4SR. That's Four-Season Room. Advanced insulation. Double-pane Energy Star windows. Independent climate control. No humidity. No mosquitoes. Just two-and-a-half minutes where the weather reports lose all authority.

Katy B & Jax Jones pose playfully, both making pouting faces in a dimly lit room.

The title points toward sunsets and nostalgia, but the production has other plans. Jungle drums keep everything in constant motion while Katy B's vocal locks hands with the beat and goes wherever it leads. Every kick drum nudges the song forward until your shoulders decide they're participating too.

The lyrics know the season is ending. The music couldn't care less. Even when Katy B wonders if “all good things come to an end,” “Last Day Of Summer” refuses to turn around and admire the sunset. There's no wistful goodbye to squeeze out of it, no sudden urge to make summer mean more simply because it's almost gone.

Maybe that's why my imaginary four-season room works so well. Outside, Nashville can keep doing whatever meteorological bullshit it has planned. In here, summer doesn't need a proper send-off. Just good insulation and a song with absolutely no respect for the forecast.
