Grace Carter – “Rather You Leave”
There are certain administrative requirements for a great pop song. Infectious production. A voice sitting exactly where it belongs. Enough push and pull to keep everything moving. Color. Personality. “Rather You Leave” has submitted the necessary paperwork and been approved. Grace Carter has always possessed the voice, but there's something especially satisfying about hearing it dropped into production this playful. Every little rise, retreat and rhythmic turn seems designed to keep the song bouncing without ever making a big production out of how well it's doing it.
The funny part is that Grace is having considerably less fun than we are. She'd rather somebody leave her broken than hang around without really choosing her. Seven years have already gone down the drain, she's finally found herself again, and starting over isn't particularly high on the agenda. Heartbreaking. Anyway, this beat. That's the rabbit out of the hat. The subject matter says emotional self-preservation while everything surrounding it says somebody just opened another bottle.
It fits the larger reset behind Grace's forthcoming debut album, When Saturn Returns, out October 16. The project takes its name from that astrological period when your late twenties start asking increasingly invasive questions about adulthood, relationships, identity and whether you have any idea what you're doing. Grace has described this chapter as finally making music she's genuinely excited to share, and after hearing this, the feeling seems contagious.
Her social world somehow reinforces it. Scroll around long enough and Grace doesn't register like somebody we're observing from behind the velvet rope. She feels like the friend you call because whatever we're doing tonight will improve once she gets there. Which presents a fairly straightforward solution to the romantic problem at hand: whoever inspired “Rather You Leave” may do exactly that. We're keeping Grace. We have plans.
