Florrie - "Malibu (Falling Over The Edge)"
A drummer named Florrie? Kick Kick SnareE never really had a choice.
I've spent enough time driving the Pacific Coast Highway to know Malibu isn't just a place. Windows down, salt in the air, the sun slowly disappearing into the Pacific. Conversations stretch longer than the drive itself. So when Florrie sings about late-night drives with your feet on the dash, she's not giving us directions. She's giving us the version of a place that only exists because of who was sitting beside you.
That's the trick inside “Malibu (Falling Over The Edge).” The production is bright, colorful and practically demands a hairbrush microphone, while Florrie is busy sorting through friendship, obsession and the blurry territory of a “girl crush.” The song never insists on defining exactly what that relationship was. It understands that the person who changes a place for you doesn't necessarily need a title.
And suddenly Malibu can be anywhere. A coastline. The coffee shop where you met somebody. A neighborhood you'll never drive through quite the same way again. Places have a funny way of borrowing meaning from the people we experience them with.
Florrie's next album, Magic For A While, arrives this October. If “Malibu” is our way in, she's already given us somewhere worth returning to.
