dublon - "Tell Me More And More And Then Some (dublon Remix)"

Not every classic needs reinvention. Some just need a beautiful new place to live.

Nina Simone is not casual remix material. Put your hands on a voice that recognizable and the responsibility is pretty simple: know when to get out of its way. dublon apparently understood that before touching a note. He immersed himself in Simone's catalog first, then built “Tell Me More And More And Then Some” around the thing nobody needed him to improve: Nina Simone.

What he gives her instead is a new room. Warm jazz-house production opens up around Simone's vocal, letting the original's elegance settle comfortably onto a dance floor without dressing it up for the occasion. You can hear dublon's own musical language everywhere, but his best decision is knowing exactly how much of it the song needs. Linen shirts and good wine still feel appropriate. Checking the time does not.

The remix sent me straight back to Nina Simone's original, which may be the highest compliment available here. dublon didn't make a classic sound current. He gave us another reason to hear why it never stopped being current.
