CRATE Pulls of the Week

Featuring SILK x Shift K3Y, AVELLO x Abi Flynn, OMNOM feat. Tommy Genesis, Goldie x Natalie Williams x Break, Argy x Alok x Adam Beyer & AHEE

Every Friday we update CRATE with the records that hit a little harder than everything living on Condensed. Bass music, UK garage, breaks, electro, festival weapons, late-night discoveries... if it rattles the speakers, it probably ended up here. Here are this week's favorite additions.

SILK, Shift K3Y – “GOTTA MAKE IT”

Because what’s the alternative? Not making it? I don’t know exactly what we’re talking about. Your goals? A sandwich? SILK & Shift K3Y, you’re welcome to weigh in as long as it doesn’t interrupt the masterclass already in session. Heavy bass, house and UK garage pile in at 134 BPM with Cloud 9 as the stated destination. Consider the motivational material supplied. Overachievers, you know what to do. Grab the sandwiches, it’s time to go.

AVELLO, Abi Flynn – “in my dreams”

In my dreams, record companies would make press releases readily available for those of us who actually want the details. Instead, it’s a little like being stuck in line at the club when all you want to do is get inside and mow down the dance floor. As a publicist myself, I’d expect the first thing Grandpa Google hands over to be a press release, not a mediocre recap article interrupted by pop-up ads. Anyway, the velvet rope has lifted. AVELLO and Abi Flynn have given us a night-light made of disco balls, complete with a bass line at the :39 mark capable of scaring away anything lurking under the bed or hiding in the closet.

OMNOM feat. Tommy Genesis – “Pressure”

This is the kind of peer pressure your parents warned you about. OMNOM and Tommy Genesis pull up in an unmarked van and the next thing you know you're being lured inside. Is “Pressure” the gateway drug to longer sets, sweaty dancefloors and inappropriate behavior? Is there room for one more in that bathroom stall? Exactly. Tommy keeps her voice suspiciously calm while OMNOM revs the engine. By the time the synths start rattling and the low end gets involved, we're already in the van.

Goldie, Natalie Williams, Break – “Jungle Daze - Break Remix”

I don't usually add remixes to CRATE, but apparently Break went through my cassette mixtapes from the late '90s and forced my hand. His take on Goldie’s “Jungle Daze” sounds like he found all my favorite noises hiding between the spools and tailored them specifically for me. Natalie Williams comes into focus in fluorescent fashion before Break lets the bassline loose and starts roughing up the drums, and suddenly my friends and I are back in LA, buying mixtapes at raves and wearing them out on the drive home to San Diego. Those trips down I-5 became their own exclusive afterparties. We'd sing our hearts out and try everything we could to beat the sun home. Goldie, Natalie and Break just put one back in the deck.

Argy, Alok, Adam Beyer – “Keep Up”

Why do I feel like Argy, Alok and Adam Beyer huddled together and wrote this song as a personal attack on me? Look, I am trying my Kardashian best to keep up. I just have a lot going on. Let me get organized. Argy on atmosphere? Check. Alok wiring the hook? Check. Adam Beyer putting steel in the floorboards? Check. Flip the breaker. Now we’re ready for Berghain. See you soon, Sven.

AHEE – “Gatita Rica”

In Spanish, gatita rica can read roughly as “hot little kitty,” depending on the context. The context: We have a three-minute slab of bass music called “Gatita Rica,” made by a guy whose public bio says he’s stranded on Earth because his cat stole his UFO. AHEE, I’m not entirely sure what to do with any of this, but I’d love to be friends and hitch a ride when your cat gets back.
