[PREMIERE] Soliterre: Go Down Dancing

[PREMIERE] Soliterre: Go Down Dancing

Let’s be upfront. There is nothing better than disco. That is an objective fact. So when Soliterre sent "Go Down Dancing" our way, we knew we were in for a treat. The Vancouver based producer takes us straight down a retro-soaked passageway straight into the sounds of 1984 on his latest. With stacked Linn Drums, throaty synth pads, and plenty of 808 percussion, Go Down Dancing gets us high on vintage groove. And just when you think this song stops giving, there’s a trumpet solo, followed by a piano solo, followed by a guitar solo. It’s 2017 and we just got three solos in a row. If that’s not a feat of strength, I don’t know what is. Loop this one all weekend long & bring the groove back in your life.

Go Down Dancing is a subtle nod to the late disco pioneer and genre-defying visionary Arthur Russell. I had the chance to record with some of his collaborators last year in New York, where they continue the legacy of his music as the band ‘Arthur’s Landing’. This song is constructed around a simple melodic sequence on a Korg DS-8 synthesizer that remains prominent throughout, while mood is ever changing as the song progresses. Delving into Arthur’s catalog taught me a lot about the beauty of simplicity and repetition, which are qualities of dance music I used to scoff at.
