Coachella Artist Spotlight: SZA

SZA

So I’m sitting here at work trying not to absolutely off myself due to the constant imbalance in my coffee to stress ratio. Sound familiar? Shit sucks. Like for real doe. The only thing keeping me to carry on another day is the glorious sans cubicle sanctuary of the Coachella promised land, nearing evermore within my grasp as each torturous day passes. Ok so I’m being a little dramatic but you have no idea how much I am in NEED of making terrible decisions in my life right now. I’ve been coping with the after math of a long string of responsible ones lately, and it’s becoming real taxing on my personal life. “Hi, yes, Coachella? Yeah I was just calling because I’d like to place an order for a hangover I’m looking to pick up in about a week and a half or so. Are those still available? They are? Wonderful, I’ll have one for me and all of my friends.” The only thing keeping me through each day are those unpaid moments in between where I get to sit and listen to the music I’m hoping to not even remember being played live. As everyone is mapping out their favorites, which most likely include the obvious headliners, every bad bitch bone in my body is counting down the days till my girl SZA flips my world upside down. If you don’t already know, honay you NEED. Pipes aside, she signed with TDE alongside bread winning artists like Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q, but what’s even cooler than that, and I know what you’re thinking… what’s cooler than being cold?? Answer: making her the first and only female artist on the independent label. Holdin’ it down for the mutha fuckin ladies. Werk! Oh and speaking of down ass bitches who werk werk werk werk werk, guess who co-wrote and features on a song on regal Robyn aka Rihanna’s latest Anti album? SZA SZA SZA. She’s just one of those artists that people use the word “dope” to describe as. Some describe her style as Neo Soul, alt RnB, a few variations including the word chill in it that I just can’t get on board with only because I hate the word chill so much. But it is supes chill. Supes dope. She toured with Imogen Heap in 2013 and cites Bjork and Wu Tang as some of her influences. Ummmm hello? Dope dope dope. Dopety dope McDoperson. Check out her song “Warm Winds” and sit back and let it change your life. Seriously. It turns into like a two for one special somewhere in the middle when you’re least expecting it, and I’m telling you right now, you’re not going to even know that it was ever possible to feel that level of feels.
