[BEST OF 2013] Favorite Song: Tom Aspaul - Indiana
Okay so this was hands down the most challenging category of the "Best Of" list. There are literally hundreds of songs I was in love with this year (don't believe me? See our Monthly Mixtapes) and we aren't even going to add in the fact that Beyonce dropped her brilliance on the world just weeks before the end of the year. Through some divine inspiration I was able to narrow the list down and after much deep and introspective musical soul searching I have made a choice. My favorite song of the year is Tom Aspaul's debut single "Indiana". (Please note the contenders for this title included Studio Killers, Chelsea Lankes, Bel Heir, & of course Betty Who)
Tom Aspaul's stunning debut is an intoxicating concoction of bright synths, soulful vocals, and bouncey basslines, that has only gotten better with each progressive listen. "Indiana" rather deftly mixes the best elements of the emerging pop world into one song. There are elements of slick minimalist R&B soaked synth pop that is currently influencing artists from AYER to Beyonce, with a shimmering indie pop sweetness that feels like St. Lucia & Carousel, to proper dance inspirations that beef up its bass line to strut inducing levels. It's this bold mix of influences that really sets "Indiana" apart from the rest of the pop music landscape, oh and MNEK produced this track. So brilliance all around.
