[BEST OF 2013] Favorite New Artist: Mikhael Paskalev
There was a ton of great new music, but the one new artist that sticks out to me is Norwegian singer-songwriter Mikhael Paskalev. I'd never heard the name until about May, and he still hasn't officially released his album in the states, but you should make every possible effort to get ahold of that. Paskalev writes smart, infectious indie rock brewed with a twist of fractured genius, not dissimilar to Jeff Mangum. It's pop rock with influences spanning he decades, but ultimately Paskalev crafts a sound unique to him (with help from ever awesome producer and Dan Croll collaborator Joe Wills). Unique harmonies, witty lyrics, hooks the infiltrate your head for days-it's really hard to say no.
"I Remember You" is hands down one of the best 5 tracks of year and lead single "I Spy" comes complete with gang choruses And a beautifully shot, Risky Business referencing video that features Paskalev dancing around and subsequently destroying a room in nothing but briefs and a dress shirt. Peep it below.
