Alphabeat teased us last week with ‘Love Sea’, but as always are good on their word and released the entire new single today. This is BIG pop! We had a little chat with Anders SG from Alphabeat this weekend and found out they are looking to shake up the standard pop sound and look for some new inspiration from the past. “We’re a bit sick and tired of the simplicity in a lot of dance pop around these days and for this album we really looked way back to find inspiration. It’s as if songwriters have stopped thinking about making long lasting tunes that you will want to hear in 10 or maybe 20 years from now which is very important to us. It’s all about harder, faster, dumber.”
Don’t think that this will lead to an Alphabeat that takes itself too seriously or leaves their trademark bright pop sound behind. “A song may sound very simple when you hear it, but it has got so many layers of different chords, bass lines and themes. We have focused a lot on making songs with more depth than you’d think. It’s tricky but simple pop.” Listening to ‘Love Sea’ it is very easy to hear this approach to making music. With component sounds that range from epic pop rock, left-field percussive sounds and infectious synth pop, ‘Love Sea’ is light and fun song with a lot of thought and depth just below the handclaps and sing along chorus.
You can take a listen to ‘Love Sea’ below. It is available in Europe as of this moment and is scheduled to hit the US and UK soon. Make sure to check back soon for more from our chat with Alphabeat this week and get the scoop on their upcoming album and the true value of confetti.
