It is a conundrum that many 18 – __’s are having these days, the critical decision of taking the path of “the job” and stability: paying your bills on time, calming the worries of kin, ultimately getting married, having non-televised rugrats, maybe a vacation to Florida once in a while to mix it up a bit. Through door B are your passions, whether that may be art, a carpentry business you always wanted to start, a trip around the world. But along with these lust for life ideals, one will find a storm of social and financial risk that makes Chicago winters look like a pocket-sized snow globe.
I speak of this decision as a reflection of Capybara and the kickstarter they successfully championed early last year, as they were in a similar situation. It’s interesting to listen to these tracks and actually hear/feel the hope, yearning, risk, and excitement they are currently going through as they turn back from stability to pursue music full time. “Wherever you want to go” reverberates in my head while listening to Capybara’s new single “Late Night Bikes”, as I ponder the conundrum above, what it means to take these risks and succeed in a life where ones creative decisions dictate the outcome and not a faceless CEO. “Neighborhood Crimes” is the track that hooked me into these van-stache lovers, as 32ft/second put it, the track has “a certain intimacy mixed with a critical distance. Sounding like a UB40 demo taken out to the garage and then shot up in the sky.” I am very excited to hear more from Capybara, especially as their overall online presence reflects a group of truly great people. Props to 32ft/second for keeping my music search under 15 minutes today!
