Hard-nosed football teams aside, Papa consists of Darren Weiss and Daniel Present, a hard working, indoor sky-dive loving, blue collar rock group out of Los Angeles. Named after the childhood vernacular that Darren Weiss assigned to his badass of a grandfather (read Nylon interview,) Papa bring us an upbeat, mid-fidelity “afternoon drive up the California coast” track inspired by the act of intentionally letting love go, even if it may not be for the best. I don’t know if you were one of the masses digging on Dirty Gold’s California Sunrise, but this track reminds me a less content, mid-western version. It’s ideal for the weather hanging over our heads in Chicago: cold, bitter, but still a hint of warmth, similar to all those lingering memories of her.
