So Dubstep, I will be honest, not my thing. It is a little lacking in melody and most things that make good music, the noise comes before the music and vocals. Every now and then though, someone gets it right, fusing the grimy sound with great elements. Example and Nero are some of the best instances of this, and have vocals that add to the wall of sound Dubstep throws at you.
That all said William Carney, from Virginia Beach, has got something wonderful going on. ‘British Humor’ is playful and fun, with a bouncy intro that lets you know from the start this is not your run of the mill dubsteppery. (Yes I am going to coin that term here and now) The light and melodic house synths break up the deep, thumping grime of the bass, ensuring that it does not becoming overwhelming or over done. A wonderful balance of grime and playfulness.
The raw, consuming nature of Dubstep could easily take over the delicate sound of Ellie Goulding‘s ‘Lights’, but William is able to make something that is full of energy, dancey and just the right amount of hard edge.
This remix will definitely be making an appearance this Sunday, when I take over for DJ Shea Van Horn at Guil-TEA Dance at Nellies Sports Bar, where I will be bringing you the very best of my guilty pop pleasures!
